![]() In 1833 his friend Garrison encouraged him to use his writing to speak out against slavery at the time. He published a book of poetry, but it had not taken off as he had hoped and so he retired due to illness in 1831. When he was 22 years old he took a job at The American Manufacturer which was a Boston newspaper writing about politics and argumentation. Inspiration at a young age came from another poet named Robert Burns and the folklore that surrounded the area of Massachusetts. He grew with poor a upbringing in a Quaker household. John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Massachusetts in 1807. He was known as a writer who related best to the people because he spoke most about everyday life. ![]() This continued until 1941 where he had also continued writing poetry. In 1931 he started broadcasting on NBC radio and showed up on TV. Guest later married and became an author writing books as well. He wrote on current events, poetry, and in a weekly column offering advice. When his father died he left school to take care of his family and worked at the press full time. He started working at the Detroit Press when he was just a little bit older. His family migrated to Detroit in 1891 when he was 10 years old. On the Poetry Foundation as an American PoetĮdgar A. Guest as the author but others believe it to be John G. The poem is called "Don't Quit" and some people credit the author Edgar A. I memorized it and carry it as a memory today. It's the most inspirational poem I've ever read. That poem is a part of history, of my history, and the history of the person who writes it. On her door, every day I walked by it I looked at a poem taped on it. As a kid something I loved was history and I used to live with my aunt. The most important parts of me that shaped me became memories I could look back on and smile about. When I first rode a bike, when I learned to swim, and when I went to Las Vegas for a family reunion. The first time I traveled outside of the U.S and my first day of middle school. When I was younger I had a lot of moments like that. Some dismiss it as overly emotional, while others believe the heartfelt simplicity is precisely its appeal.Everyone remembers things about their childhood that stood out as interesting or important. Critical opinion on the value of Whittier's poetry is mixed. He was a staunch abolitionist, and produced two collections of anti-slavery poems, along with an anti-slavery pamphlet that managed to incur the wrath of bothsides and effectively any hopes Whittier had of a political career. An avid reader and writer early on, Whittier spent much of his working life as an editor, though he had political aspirations as well. Born into a Massachusetts farm family, Whittier was introduced to poetry by one of his school teachers. And Whittier was one of those rare poets who actually made a rather comfortable living from the proceeds of his work. The author is: “John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 - 1892) was one of the "Fireside Poets," called such because their work was popular enough to be read (ostensibly by the fire) in homes all over America. My grandfather kept it with him as a Div 1 United States Marine at Okinawa and then on his desk when he was a community leader in NY’s Little Italy & Chinatown. ![]() For 3 generations this poem was passed from father to son in my family. I only found out recently that the author is NOT anonymous. It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit. I thought of posting this at LinkedIn, mainly in light of various negative posts that I have been seeing lately, which justify and encourage quitting. It has definitely inspired generations of Americans. This is a superb inspiring poem, in my view, although no one knows who wrote this poem, and exactly how long ago it was written.
